After more than two years, the KLIA aerotrain service will officially operate on July 1, 2025 at 10am.
According to Transport Minister Anthony Loke, the new system has undergone various security tests including the Simulation of the Emergency Action Plan (ERP) monitored by the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD).
The recovery of this service is very important ahead of the Visit Malaysia Year 2026, where Malaysia is expected to receive a significant increase in the number of international tourists.
KLIA as the country’s main entrance needs to ensure a smooth and efficient passenger experience.
Modern and reliable aerotrain is part of an effort to strengthen the image of the country in the eyes of the world
Functions and Importance of Aerotrain KLIA
Aerotrain KLIA is an automated transportation system connecting the main terminal building with satellite buildings at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).
Aerotrain was built as a solution to move international passengers from the release station to the satellite terminal, over 1 kilometer.
Each train moves at speeds of up to 56 km/h, allowing passengers to reach the destination in just 2 minutes.
Since the start of operations, Aerotrain has been used by millions of passengers every year, making it the backbone of KLIA’s internal logistics.
Since operating in 1998, it has played an important role in accelerating the movement of international passengers.
However, the service was stopped in March 2023 due to technical damage, causing passengers to rely on intermediate bus services.
Issues of damage and replacement

Despite its important role, Aerotrain KLIA is not operating perfectly without challenges.
As a system that has been operating for more than two decades, it begins to show signs of aging.
Among the major issues that arise include frequent damage, causing service disruption and delays to passengers.
On March 2023, the aerotrain system was completely stopped following several incidents including an emergency that caused passengers to walk on the train.
The government and the Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) acted immediately and decided to fully replace the KLIA aerotrain system.
Replacement involves the reconstruction of the entire system including rails, stations, control systems, and the supply of 3 new sets of trains with more modern and safe technology.
According to a official statement by the Ministry of Transport of Malaysia on June 20, 2025, three new sets of aerotrain have been completed and are currently undergoing testing. Among them are:
- Dynamic test
- System integration test
- Fault-Free Run (fault-free run) as far as 2,000 km
- Security Confirmation by Apad and relevant authorities
The new trend is 270 passengers each and more user -friendly with digital information boards, new air conditioning systems, and bilateral communications technology directly with control centers.
