The SPM Graduate Merit Calculator is a tool to help SPM graduate students estimate the UPU merit score before applying for admission to IPT through UPUOnline.
It is very useful especially for SPM graduates or candidates who are about to sit for the SPM exam who still do not know that the calculation of UPU merit marks is one of the main policies and criteria for student selection to IPT.
The calculation of UPU merit marks is based on the principle of meritocracy, which is the evaluation of applicants’ qualifications based on academic performance. Therefore, every UPU applicant needs to know how to calculate the UPU merit score in order to understand the chances of admission to a public university.
This calculation can be done using merit calculators available on several online platforms. Although only an estimate, the SPM Graduation Merit Calculator helps students plan their study options more clearly and realistically after SPM.

Example of SPM Merit Calculation
UPU merit marks for SPM graduates are calculated based on 100% overall merit marks, which are divided into two main components, namely academic marks (90%) and co-curricular marks (10%).
For academic marks, calculations are made using a combination of:
- Universal Subject Merit (40%)
- Merit Package Subjects (30%)
- Best Subject Merit (10%)
The sum of these three components forms 80% academic markswhich is then used to determine 90% academic merit marks.
Finally, the academic score (90%) will plus co-curricular marks (10%) to get overall UPU merit score (100%).

Example of STPM Merit Calculation
The calculation of merit marks for STPM, Matriculation, Foundation and STAM is based entirely on academic marks.
For STPM, CGPA is provided by the Malaysian Examinations Council (MPM). For Matriculation/Foundation, PNGK is provided by relevant institutions such as the Matriculation Division of the Ministry of Education and Culture, PASUM, UiTM Foundation, GENIUS@Pintar UKM, Polytechnic and Community College.
While for STAM, CGPA is determined based on the result grade (Mumtaz to Rasib) which is converted to CGPA value.
Academic marks are calculated using the CGPA × 90 formula. For Diplomas or equivalent qualifications, calculations are made using 100% academic marks without the involvement of co-curricular marks.

For STPM and STAM applicants, a 10% co-curricular score is obtained through an assessment issued by the Sports, Co-Curriculum and Arts Division, Ministry of Education Malaysia (BSKK, KPM). This score is taken into account along with the academic score in the calculation of the UPU merit score.
For Matriculation and Foundation applicants, 10% co-curricular marks are provided by the respective institutions such as the Ministry of Education Matriculation Division, Universiti Malaya Science Foundation Center (PASUM), UKM’s GENIUS@Pintar Center, UiTM Foundation Center as well as the Department of Polytechnic Education and Community College.
Overall, the UPU merit marks for STPM, STAM, Matriculation and Foundation are calculated based on a combination of:
- 90% academic marks
- 10% co-curricular marks
While for Diploma or equivalent qualifications, the calculation of merit marks is based on 100% academic marks only without involving co-curricular marks.
