What is a PHEV Train
A PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) is a vehicle that uses an electric battery and an internal combustion engine, just like an HEV, but with a larger battery that can be charged via an electrical outlet. Examples of PHEVs include the Hyundai Tucson Plug-in Hybrid and the Honda Clarity.
The main advantages of PHEVs are that they have a longer electric driving range, produce lower emissions, and are suitable for short trips using all-electric power. However, PHEVs are usually more expensive than HEVs, but cheaper than BEVs.

The Proton PHEV 2026 is getting closer to becoming a reality with the official unveiling of the Proton eMas 7 PHEV, Proton’s first plug-in hybrid model announced during Proton Tech Showcase on December 4 at the Proton Center of Excellence (COE), Shah Alam.
This marks a historic moment for the national brand, as it is the first time Proton has officially entered the PHEV market.
Although not yet launched, the pre-view unit shown to the public gives an almost real picture of the model that is expected to join Proton’s hybrid line-up.
From design to powertrain technology, the Proton eMas 7 PHEV shows Proton’s new direction in the electrification era.
Car Model Design
Proton eMas 7 PHEV is developed based on Geely’s latest hybrid platform, which is the same architecture used on the Starship/Galaxy 7 model for the global market.
However, the Proton version comes with a unique design, including a larger Proton tiger logo on the front and a more “manly” SUV appearance compared to the eMas 7 full electric version.
The front features a modern design language with split LED headlamps, full-width DRL light bars and a more pronounced grille section.
Proton also chose conventional door handles different from flush door handles on EV models for compatibility with the hybrid platform and lower maintenance costs.
At the rear, the bumper and tailgate door layout receive a new touch. With the number plate positioned higher, many people equate the rear silhouette of this SUV with premium European SUV models.
The preview unit also features 19-inch multi-spoke alloy rims and a special charging port on the side.
Interior Space: Modern, Clean & Spacious
The right-hand drive (RHD) configuration on display closely resembles the layout of the Proton eMas 7 EV.
It comes with a wide infotainment display, a minimalistic dashboard and the use of more modern materials, reflecting Proton’s new standard in cabin design.
EM-i Hybrid Power with 18.4 kWh LFP Battery
Under the hood, the eMas 7 PHEV is powered by a 1.5 liter Atkinson-cycle engine designed for maximum efficiency, paired with Geely’s EM-i Super Hybrid system.
This internal combustion engine uses an electric compressor and simplified components, making it lighter and reducing mechanical energy loss.
Electricity is supported by an 18.4 kWh LFP battery, which sends power to the electric motor via a 12-in-1 Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT).
In many daily driving situations, this SUV moves using all-electric power, while the engine is only active at higher speeds to improve fuel efficiency.
The result of this combination of technologies provides smooth driving response as well as significant fuel savings.
Proton also stated that the total driving range can reach up to 1,065 km, making it one of the longest range electrified SUVs ever exhibited in Malaysia.
Official Price
Proton has yet to announce an official price, but early surveys show high interest from visitors and existing Proton owners.
The survey form given to Proton X50 customers also suggested a price range of RM130k–RM140k, in line with its complex hybrid technology as well as the absence of specific tax incentives for PHEVs in Malaysia.
