Mufti Department Advises Avoid Early Speculation Date 1 Syawal 1447H

The Selangor State Mufti Department advises the public not to make any preliminary speculation regarding the setting of the date of 1 Syawal 1447 Hijrah.

The clarification was made following confusion over the possibility of Hari Raya Aidilfitri falling on Friday as opposed to expectations in the annual calendar which states Saturday.

The statement also explained that the official setting of 1 Syawal is subject to the rukyah hilal process on the evening of the 29th of Ramadan as well as the declaration by the authority. The difference between calendar expectations and official results is also not unusual in the system of determining the beginning of the Islamic month.

In addition, factors such as the position of the crescent moon and weather conditions can affect the appearance of the new moon when observing.

Accordingly, the community is advised to remain calm and focus on worship, especially in the last 10 days of Ramadan while waiting for the official announcement from the Keeper of the Great Seal of the Kings to ensure the exact date of the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration.

MEDIA STATEMENT : DETERMINATION OF EIDUL FITRI DATE IN MALAYSIA

The Selangor State Mufti Department is aware that the Sharjah Academy of Astronomical Sciences, Space and Technology (SAASST) which is an institution in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) that conducts space research and astronomical observation and several other Arab countries has announced the expected date of 1 Shawwal 1447H is on Friday March 20, 2026. This department is also aware that the start of fasting which is 1 Ramadan for the Arab countries is on Wednesday 18 February 2026. This means that the Muslim community in the relevant Arab countries will fast Ramadan for 30 days.

The start of fasting for Muslims in Arab countries this year is different from the start of fasting in Malaysia including Selangor because of the date 1 Ramadhan is set on Thursday 19 February 2026. In this regard, Malaysia applies the criteria al-ru’yah position (visibility) of the hilal (crescent moon) in determining the beginning of the Islamic month including the months of Ramadhan and Shawwal, through the observation process of the hilal (crescent moon) carried out on the 29th day of the month of Sha’ban or Ramadhan, as the case may be. This is based on the hadith narrated from Abu Hurairah RA that the Prophet SAW said:

Fast to see it and break the fast to see it

It means: You fast because you see it (the new moon of Ramadhan), and you break your fast because you see it (the new moon of Shawwal). (Narrated by al-Bukhari)

Criteria imkan ar-ru’yah stipulating that the crescent (moon) is considered to be visible when the following conditions are met:

i. The height of the moon is not less than 3 degrees at sunset, and ii. The distance of the sun-moon curve (elongation) is not less than 6.4 degrees.

In connection with that, the official sighting of the Syawwal hilal (new moon) for the determination of Eidul Fitri in Malaysia this year will be done on 29 Ramadhan 1447H corresponds to Thursday 19 March 2026. After receiving an insight report from the Head of the Moon Watching Committee in each state and with the approval of the Council of Malaysian Rulers, the Keeper of the Great Seal of Rulers will declare the date of Hari Raya Eidul Fitri on that night.

It should be understood that the beginning of the Islamic month is dependent on the sighting of the crescent (moon) and the data on the position of the moon on the date of sighting in one country. Every country has power’ ru’yah which are different and the determination of the beginning of the Islamic month in one country is not subject to the result of the sighting of the crescent moon (moon) or data on the position of the moon in other countries.

Therefore, Muslims in the state of Selangor are advised to remain calm and focus on fasting, especially during the last ten days of Ramadan. Let’s all respect the sighting of the Syawwal crescent and wait for the declaration of Eidul Fitr by the Keeper of the Great Seal of the Kings on 29 Ramadhan 1447H corresponds to Thursday 19 March 2026.

Dates of Hari Raya Aidilfitri 2026 & KPM School Holidays

The official announcement of the date of Hari Raya Aidil Fitri 1447H / 2026M will be made by the Keeper of the Great Seal of the Kings as the authority entrusted by the Council of Kings.

Determination is subject to the results of moon sighting activities in 29 locations across the country.

Here are the dates for the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration for the year 2026.

The Ministry of Education and Culture has set additional holidays for teachers and students for Aidilfitri preparations. The leave was given to make it easier for the parties involved to prepare for the holiday.

For the year 2026, the granting of leave has been announced through the 2026/2027 Academic Calendar Calendar issued by the MoE.

An additional 1-day holiday by the Ministry of Education and Culture has been granted for Group A schools on March 19, 2026, while Group B schools get 2 additional days off on March 19 and 20, 2026. The 21st and 22nd of the month are public holidays and from that date, Term 1 Vacation has started for 1 week.
