With a reputation as one of the most prestigious and intense events of each edition, this year saw great competition in three main categories: singles, doubles and teams.

Introduction of Badminton SEA Games 2025

Badminton is a sport with a long foundation and evolution. It started from the activity of hitting a ball attached with feathers (early shuttlecock) in return using the hands or a racket.

The sport then developed into one of the most popular sports for all ages and genders, with competitions being held widely internationally as well as in the Southeast Asian region.

Thailand, as the host of the 2025 SEA Games, established the Thai Badminton Association in 1950.

The association is officially recognized by the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) and is a fully registered national badminton body, as well as being a full member of the Badminton World Federation (BWF), the Badminton Confederation of Asia (BAC), and the National Olympic Committee of Thailand.

For the SEA Games, badminton is one of the 12 sports that have been contested since the first edition, which was originally known as the SEAP Games in 1959.

For the upcoming 33rd SEA Games, the badminton event will take place in the Pathum Thani Region, which is part of the Bangkok Metropolitan Area.

Competitive Events

Badminton SEA Games 2025 will include 3 categories namely:

1. Individuals
2. Doubles
3. Team up.

Competition Rules and Laws

• Players are divided into two sides. Each side must hit the shuttlecock over the net and land on the opponent’s court. If successful, they get one point.
• System Rally Point used to determine win/lose, meaning that each exchange of badminton will result in one point to one side. If one side reaches 21 points first, they win the set.
• Matches are played in a best of three format. The team that wins two sets first is the winner of the match.
• If the score is tied 20 : 20 in any set, a special rule applies: the side must lead by 2 points to win the set.
• If the score reaches 29 : 29 in any set, the side that scores the 30th point first wins the set immediately.
